Anne Arundel Dermatology

I was recently an intern at the Anne Arundel Dermatology, Prince Frederick branch. I shadowed the physician's assistant and the medical assistants during patient visits. I learned a lot of valuable information about skin cancer, in particular, melanoma. I was even able to observe how a dermapathologist excised an area affected by skin cancer Also, I gained knowledge about many of the conditions of the skin, such as psoriasis, acne, warts, contact dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis. I learned about the different types of medicine used to help patients manage or get rid of their conditions. I was surprised to find out that in order to take Accutane, a popular medicine used to treat acne, a female has to take multiple pregnancy tests, blood tests, and sign up for the "I Pledge" program, while males do not have to go through such a lengthy procedure.

At my time at Anne Arundel Dermatology, I witnessed how a medical office ran. It was very interesting to see the process of intaking a patient, their consultation, and how medical insurances work. Many medical insurances do not cover cosmetic treatments, such as removing an unwanted mole. However, the insurance company would cover the removal of an irritated or precancerous mole. The medical assistants would have to hassle with the insurance company to get their patient's treatment plan covered.

I really enjoyed my time at this mentorship program. Everyone I shadowed was extremely nice and always willing to answer my questions. Since I had almost no prior knowledge before starting at Anne Arundel Dermatology, every procedure had to be explained to me. The staff were very patient an explained conditions and treatment plans in terms I could comprehend. I completely recommend Anne Arundel Dermatology for any other students wishing to pursue a career in dermatology. I was really able to get a feel for whether or not I could see myself becoming a dermatologist. I do want to become a dermatologist and I am very lucky that I had the opportunity to have firsthand experience in this field.
