How the Community Mentorship Program Has Impacted Me
When I opened the letter this fall saying that I was accepted into the Community Mentorship Program, I was beyond ecstatic. Getting the opportunity to intern at local hospitals isn't something that many are offered, so I didn't take this opportunity lightly. Through this program and the internships I was given, my appreciation for medical careers has broadened. You always hear stereo types of how a medical job works, but being able to see it first hand is to much more knowledgeable.
This year, I was fortunate enough to be able to intern as a physical therapist, OBGYN, labor and delivery nurse, pediatric hospitalist, urgent care nurse, pediatric hospitalist, and a radiologist. Even though all of these careers differ, they all taught me a little something that I didn't know before. For example, as a radiologist, I learned how to read the computer screens during a procedure and how to determine how much time a person should be exposed to radiation. Also as an OBGYN, I learned the proper questions to ask a mother to better determine the health status of her delivery.
Being able to intern in a Pediatric unit was the highlight of my internships. After collete, I plan to pursue a career as a Pediatric nurse and then be able to go back to school to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Through these internships in the pediatric unit, I was able to see first hand some of the tasks that I may encounter when I ecomea nurse in my future.
Being granted the opportunity to intern during my senior year has made this year one to remember. Not man other seniors were granted this chance, so for that, I am very fortunate. Because of these internships and the Community Mentorship Program, I am more than ready to take on my future as a Pediatric nurse as I use what I have learned this year to get me there.
