Spa Creek Conservancy
For my mentorship I worked with Mr. Mel Wilkins and the team of the Spa Creek Conservancy in Edgewater. The mission of the Spa Creek Conservancy is to restore the Spa Creed o a stable and supportive ecosystem. This is not easy work as I learned because not only do they have a physical work on their end to do they also have to get the cooperation of businesses and residents in the area to do their part in restoring the ecosystem. This can vary from simple allowing the Spa Creek Conservancy to construct erosion ponds on their property to actually providing financial contribution towards the reconstruction of the4 watershed. Through working with the team at Spa Creek Conservancy I learned all about the public relations through a meeting with the public I attended. I also had a chance to interact with the members of the community during a plant-a-thon. On that day we planted over 50 trees that are native to the area that will not only make the area look better but will also help filter and control the runoff. In addition we also built runoff ponds. These ponds will additionally help filter the runoff through the native species and layers of gravel that they contain.
Mr. Wilkins didn't only teach me about the physical work though. We spent a fair bit of time talking about the legal side to everything that I didn't even know existed. All of the grants and paperwork that go into a project like this are enough to make your head spin.
Overall my work with the Spa Creek Conservancy was very rewarding and educational. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the mentorship program. mr. Wilkins and the other staff are a very pleasant and good hearted bunch of people and I would highly recommend the Spa Creek Conservancy.
