My placement at Mt. Harmony to work with and observe the school's SLP (Speech and Language pathologist), Mrs. Brudish, was one of the most fascinating experiences of my life! I already had an idea that I wanted to be a SLP but I wasn't sure field I would be more interested in working later in life. I was surprised when I was placed in the school system but wouldn't change a thing looking back on it. I worked with children who had speech impediments, language deficiencies, and some tht couldn't pronounce certain letters of the alphabet. When I first started going, I only observed how Mrs. Brudish would work with the kids and what strategies would help them all individually. Towards the end I did start to sit in on exams and help Mrs. Brudish teach thre students new information. I also got the opportunity to sit in on multiple IEP meetings and really experience what is discussed.
I didn't just simply perform tasks and observe, I did take away a lot of new information about Speech Pathology as a major too and about the various job opportunities that I could receive simply from receiving this degree. Mrs. Brudish supplied a few packets of information going more in depth about being an SLP, not just in the school system but also in a more medical setting, which assisted me a lot in deciding what I want to pursue in the future after undergraduate and graduate school. This program was VERY helpful and enjoyable to be a part of at the same time, I can honestly say that this Mentorship Program has 100% reassured me that I truly want to pursue Speech Pathology.
